In this edition of Pass Her the Mic, we’re chatting with Gladys Simen, a life coach for moms!

Please, start by introducing yourself and the work you do :

I am a life enthusiast. I’ve lived in 5 different countries, mastered 2 languages (and one

un poquito!), and met more amazing people than I can count.

Because my own life has become a rich tapestry of interwoven experiences, I am passionate about helping people live big, beautiful, shooting-for-the-stars kind of lives too… right now. Becoming a fabulous mama made me an advocate for the working mom, and my coaching practice , MyLifeCouch is centered around helping working moms (re) discover their super powers and creating a more balanced life. On their own terms.

What brought you to the place you are working from now, essentially, what in your history inspired you to do what you do NOW?

Having my kids gave me a purpose bigger than I ever had prior to having them. It also made me acutely aware of the unique difficulties working moms may face in the corporate world, in terms of support and accommodation. It has been said before that we expect women to work like they don’t have children and raise children as if they don’t work, which in itself puts a lot of pressure on women.

I started lending my voice to the conversation as I didn’t want my daughter to have to face the same hurdles when her time will come and also, as the de facto role model for my kids, I wanted them to know that we should always try to make things better , even if we do not succeed. It’s about using our voice for a cause that matters – to us -.

How do you define INCLUSIVITY for yourself and your business?

Inclusivity for MyLifeCouch, my business is providing a platform where everyone is truly welcomed, valued and respected for all of who they are . And that they are heard and seen. 

Inclusivity for me is acknowledging my biases and creating a place where we can have uncomfortable conversations aiming to challenge or educate our existing thoughts. It’s seeing the strengths and abilities of everyone I meet and making sure I treat people with respect and fairness. 

 

 

This month we’re talking about inclusivity in action. What does that look like inside your business?

I am  working towards a Pay-it-Forward Fund where my coaching clients can choose to pay a little extra so it can go towards coaching less privileged people. And I have been known for coaching for free when people need a little pick me up. 

What do you want people to remember most about the work that you’re creating?

That self love and self care are two little seeds that can create BIG change within ourselves. 

What’s the next thing for you? What are you working on?

Currently  I am in the process of building community of working moms by sharing my mission,  by supporting working mothers through my coaching. 

Also I am partnering with corporate to spread the word to support working mothers at work.

We recently had the opportunity to include Cicily on a LBI panel all about money and funding for women in business! Now we get to pass her the mic and learn more about her work [ image of smiling woman ]

Hi! Cicily Newsom! I am a sales trainer and leadership development coach specifically in the Financial Services Sector. I help people start their own businesses in the Trillion Dollar industry of Life Insurance and Retirement Protection.

What brought you to the place you are working from now, essentially, what in your history inspired you to do what you do NOW? 

Growing up, no one ever taught me the value of entrepreneurship OR  financial literacy. While I have an amazing and loving family, they were blue collar people who worked their entire lives building someone else’s dream and subsequently struggled financially their entire lives only to retire on 40% of what it took them 100% to live on before they retired. I knew early on that this was a broken model. The American Dream has ELEVATED but cultural messaging is still lagging 😉

Even in college, understanding how to manage household finances, understanding how money works, understanding tax laws and financial tools these were not offerings made available to the biology students or the creatives; And certainly no one taught us about Entrepreneurship and the value of owning a business. It wasn’t until I read a pivotal book: “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki that I truly understood the Cash Flow Quadrant and the four ways people earn a living in the world: The Employed, The Self Employed, The Business Owner and the Investor. 

I became passionate about ensuring people knew how to think differently about money and wealth and freedom and business. 

It was a natural fit that I would go into financial services. Not only could I learn for myself but I could then pass along that knowledge to two different client sets; the clients who needed the insurance protection AND the agents who wanted an opportunity to build a business legacy inside of the industry.

This month our theme is “Elevate”. What does that mean to you and your business?

A few things come to mind…

*As I mentioned above- It’s past time that we begin to Elevate our cultural messaging about wealth generation and the new American Dream (aka the Global Dream). We have to elevate our views on money and our views on how and why we go to work each day.

* Also as a business owner I am constantly reminded of “Delegate to Elevate” which is a simple way of saying- we must begin to learn about our strength zones in business and delegate the tasks or opportunities that will free us up to do our best work in the world. 

How has elevating helped you grow and succeed?

We go from employed to self-employed because we want control but we become true business owners when we have leverage. We leverage the time and strengths of those around us to ELEVATE ourselves and our businesses to the next level. The results I saw in my life from this elevation are personal growth, better relational harmony with my spouse and community, a greater ability to volunteer and serve, improved health and a deeper feeling of significance and purpose. It’s amazing how much we can grow when the basic finances are covered and we get to work for ourselves. 

We leverage our businesses to ELEVATE our wealth template and thus ELEVATE the life experiences we get to have because of the financial freedoms we have created in that business. We have to let go of control in order to grow. Delegate to Elevate!

What do you want people to remember most about the work that you’re creating?

My formula for True wealth: Wealth = Time + Money [not just money]

In my humble opinion the only way to achieve true wealth is through business ownership. I want people to remember the importance of having both and to keep fighting for that balance of having both. I choose sales because I think it’s the greatest and most noble profession of all time but sales without a business is just self employment. I want to help free people from having to trade time for money. To teach that is to teach freedom, self development, financial stewardship, leadership, ownership and legacy creation. 

What’s the next thing for you? What are you working on?

Our agency is going through a rebranding phase in order to be better recognized as a house-hold name. I don’t think the Newsom Agency even knew what was possible when we first started.  I am excited to extend our brand to further reach those who are ready for business ownership and wealth as we define it; Specifically women business owners in financial services because I think women are natural owners, listeners, intuitives, communicators, consultants, problem solvers and ladybosses.

We’re proud to be introducing you to, and featuring one of our community members! Today in this edition of Pass Her The Mic, we’re highlighting and interviewing Chioma Ossai and the incredible work she creates.

Chioma, please introduce yourself!

I am the author of “A Journey to Self-Love,” which explores concepts of softness, vulnerability, and sensuality. My poetry is often centered around themes of identity, healing, and authenticity, that challenges what it means to know and love one’s self. I was born and raised in New Jersey and currently based in Berlin, Germany. I received my Bachelor’s in Music at Montclair State University, and I’m a classically trained pianist. My mission is to simply tell inviting stories through poetry, music, and blogging with the hope to evolve, share, and inspire others to write stories of their own. Eventually I hope to provide workshops and resources to women that are centered around self-love and self-development.

What brought you to the place you are working from now, essentially, what in your history inspired you to do what you do NOW?

Mainly my mother, and the many conversations I have had with friends about setting boundaries and catering to self. They have often encouraged me to share my story and host discussions around these topics. Covid also gave me the tip to reflect and realize the importance of sharing one’s story. Every time I read my own work, I got emotional and knew that it was time to share my story in order to inspire others.

How do you define “collaboration”?

Collaboration is about sharing and exchanging ideas. It is about people working in unity and alignment to create something bigger than them. Collaboration is about cooperating, creating, and crafting something that tells a powerful story meant to inspire others.

How has collaboration helped you grow and succeed?

Collaboration has allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses and where I could improve. It has required me to learn how to work with people and their different learning styles as well as their work ethics. Collaboration has also helped in my creative process and has challenged me to find innovative ways to tell meaningful stories.

What do you want people to remember most about the work that you’re creating?

I want people to remember how it makes them feel, and what it inspires them to do. I am an artist first, and I understand the value in art and the emotions it helps to evoke. I also want people to remember that they are just as capable of telling their stories in the way they want without permission. I hope people see themselves in my work and are able to feel inspired enough to write their own. Lastly, since my poetry focuses on healing and identity, I hope people form a closer bond with their own identity and are able to use some of the resources I include in my book of poetry to heal and become a better version of themselves.

What’s the next thing for you? What are you working on?

So I’ll actually be having an event with LBI this Sunday at 2pm EST to celebrate my book “A Journey to Self-Love.” Tickets are on the LBI site. The next thing after that is simple. To create and to empower. Specifically, I am in the process of editing my second book, Becoming Chi: The Journey to Self-Discovery,” which is set to release in the Fall of 2022. I am also working on crafting a newsletter that includes writing prompts, tips, and daily practices that are centered around self-awareness, healing, and emotional wellness. I would also love to host a women’s conference centered around these ideas where we could actively practice self-love. My hope is that women can leave this conference feeling empowered and be able to incorporate these practices in their daily lives so they can continue to strive in their business and personal lives.

I was just in the Ladyboss Lounge, reading the new member welcome chat.

At quick glance, I saw people from Texas, Missouri, Michigan, California.

I saw women who host podcasts, are professional ghost writers, aromatherapists, attorneys, wellness coaches, and business coaches.

I noticed that I could click the NEAR ME button and find members in my area. (I discovered a chakra healer an afternoon’s drive from where I live.)

As I sip my morning coffee and explore this virtual meeting room, I’m struck by how it feels.

The way things feel is very important to me. If a vibe is off, I have to leave.

The thing about the LBI Lounge is…the vibe is on.

It feels good.

It’s a safe space, and that’s something we all need.

Over the past few years, I have found myself craving a place where I belong, where I can be myself and share my life and my work in a supportive, affirming environment.

Maybe you’ve been craving that, too?

It is Safe to Create Together

Being a part of a safe community, where we can not only network, but also collaborate, is so important. I mean, it’s life-giving, isn’t it?

To have a place where we can support and inspire one another, especially for those working in fields that have been traditionally dominated by men, is vital.

Safe community space empowers us – as individuals and as a collective.

As a Creative, I find it incredibly important to be in communities where I can share my work without fear of judgement.

Whether you are just starting out in your business or creative endeavors, or you’ve been building a business for years, being a part of a supportive and encouraging community can provide with the guidance and the energy you need to grow and develop.

A safe community for women to share their work is essential for creating a more equitable industry.

It helps to foster a culture of acceptance and empowerment for women, non-binary, and femme presenting people. It’s a great way to develop connections and make valuable contacts that will ultimately ultimately help us thrive and be successful.

But this morning, as I’m meeting this new faces and names and reading about where people live and how they live, I’m noticing how important it is for us to simply know one another.

Hearing one another’s stories, talking about where we are from and what we love is a reminder that life is good. The world is, at its heart, good.

And we as individuals and a community…are good.

We want what’s best for ourselves, but we also want what’s best for one another.

It’s both a comfort and an inspiration.

Self Compassion: 3 Ways to Be More Kind to Yourself

My sister and I are business partners at Small L.E.A.P.S. Health & Fitness Coaching and being women in business pose its own set of challenges, let alone, building an online business during a pandemic. One of the biggest obstacles we have had to face is our own negative self-talk. So often we are our own worst enemies because our brains focus on the negatives. With so many added obstacles as women in business, it is important to give ourselves compassion.

During primal times, it was important to our survival to have a healthy dose of anxiety and a focus on the negative ‘what ifs’ as a way to protect us from real and perceived threats. So, it makes sense that now our minds and inner dialogue often instinctually move more to the negative side as our brain is still trying to protect us. However, now-a-days we do not always have to focus on the threats or negative thoughts-we are not being chased by bears or lions daily! Many people experience this kind of automatic negative thoughts on a daily basis. When these thoughts begin to interfere with our happiness, business and day to day life it may be helpful to change those thoughts. The great news is that you have the ability to shift your negative thoughts and incorporate more kindness into your life.

At Small L.E.A.P.S. we have a few strategies we use on a regular basis to build our self compassion and to move away from the negative thoughts that hurt us.

Curiosity vs Judgement

Judgements are often assumptions and not truths, yet they can hold a strong power over us. When you constantly live in a space of judgement you might tell yourself you are “not good enough”, “are worthless” or other harsh self-condemning and self-deprecating statements. When we use harsh judgements towards ourselves it can lead to consistent negativity, low self-esteem and self-worth. It can also lead to anxiety, irritability, anger, feelings of shame, guilt, frustration, all-or-nothing thinking, and feelings of discontent. Overall, it can negatively impact motivation and lower self-love. 

Reframing your thoughts is a powerful tool to become more kind to yourself. Coming from a stance of curiosity versus judgement can help you move forward in an empowered way. 

Shifting to a curious mindset can help move you to becoming more patient, and understanding. You will develop more empathy, a deeper sense of inner peace/freedom, and self-acceptance. Developing self-compassion and compassion towards others, it can lead to more happiness in your life, and can lessen the negative impacts of your inner critic. 

Curiosity does not make assumptions, it doesn’t label things as good or bad, and it listens. When you step into curiosity you are able to observe & reflect. This reflection is to help you learn, identify patterns and move forward; it allows more mindfulness into your life.

To be more curious ask yourself:

  • What led to this? 
  • Is it a pattern? 
  • What can I learn from this? 
  • Where do I go from here? What is in my control to change, what is outside of my control?
  • Ask why or why not?

Shifting Negative Thoughts

Thoughts only have the power that you give them. Know that it is possible to move towards a more empowering mindset.

When shifting negative thoughts to be more compassionate and kinder, remember to Stop, Observe, Investigate & Swap!

Stop– Take a moment to reflect.

Observe– What is the situation you are in? How do you feel? 

Investigate– Is the negative thought true? Is it something you truly believe to be 100% true? If not, what makes this untrue? 

Swap– Write out a compassionate statement that is empowering. If you struggle with compassionate statements towards yourself, take a moment and pretend your best friend or loved one is in this exact situation. What would you say to them that is compassionate?

Create a Self-Care List

Self-care can be defined as: ‘a deliberate and mindful act of acknowledging the need for purposeful self-directed health’. People often find self-care activities to be self-healing, relaxing, mindful and enjoyable. Performing self-care activities is beneficial for not only your physical but also your mental health. When there is a lack of self-care there is a higher risk of increased stress levels and challenges with effective coping. By creating and using a self-care list it can help you identify what your needs are and how to nurture them.

Creating your own self-care list will give you a variety of ways to nourish your mind, body and soul. Remember these self-care actions don’t have to be extravagant, costly, or take up loads of your time and can be flexible.

Self-care examples you could put on your own list are:

  • Diaphragmatic deep breathing
  • Learn to say “no”
  • 5 minutes for personal reflection/writing
  • Meditation
  • Physical movement
  • Allowing yourself rest

As women in business, we face so many challenges! We need to provide compassion & empower ourselves. When you have a hard day or find it difficult balancing home life with work, it is important to remember you are human, you make mistakes, you deserve compassion. It is so easy to fall into the trap of negative thinking but by approaching these thoughts with curiosity instead of judgement, actively working to shift your negative thoughts, and creating a self-care list you will be taking the first steps to developing a more self-compassionate mind set.  You can do this!

We know being an entrepreneur is no joke. It’s a full-time job and then some, but we’re here to empower you out with the best tools, information and network, so that you can feel confident as you move forward and grow. A big part of that support springs from our core values, and you’ll hear us talk about them ALL the time.

We recently shared a bit of an overview – a brief introduction if you will – to our five main core values, but we want to dive into each of them a little further. Today we want to talk about collaboration.

There are so many ways to collaborate as an entrepreneur in this day and age – clubhouse, facebook, instagram, podcasts, blog swaps, influencer marketing, co-launching products and courses, and the list goes on and on!

Here at the LBI Backstage pass we believe that there is more to collaboration that just opportunities to join forces with others. When we took the time to get specific and intentional with what collaboration looks like inside of the LBI Backstage Pass, we came up with our own definition.

Inside the LBI Backstage Pass Collaboration is…

Expansive – pushing past out comfort zones, even when it’s a little scary. Builds connections. Creates a contagious energy and synergy that inspires and transforms. Momentum that becomes unstoppable.

Inclusive – We want a community/space/platform that includes all humans that are down for the feminine glow up. Collaboration includes accessibility, open programing, translates and welcomes globally. We are open to modalities and ideas.

A Variety of Perspectives – We want this aspect of collaboration to show up in how we create and run our community – you’re included and your voice/opinion matters! So we poll the audience, do market research, plan with intention and put the CO in community. This space allows people to be and feel seen and empowered.

This is just a small peek into our core value of collaboration and how we see our community being built on this piece of our foundation!

Collaboration, as it’s typically defined, is simply working together with others to achieve a common goal. But that definition isn’t nearly enough for the challenges we face today or the mission that the LBI Backstage Pass is on. We need more than just collaboration–we need community, and all that it entails, too.

After working as an internationally published photographer, Rose Kaz is switching lenses to build bigger stages with women across the globe as they “walk the talk” of doing business differently. 

 

Kaz inspires, elevates, and collaborates with women of all socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, and nationalities from around the world by building a one-of-a-kind social media network for women, created by women. 

 

She uses her years of experience working with women-owned brands and businesses as a commercial photographer to motivate as many women as possible to take center stage in their own lives through business ventures, engaging at deeper levels of leadership, and beyond. 

 

The platform & supporting channels she and her LBI Backstage Crew  has built positions people over profits and inspires community engagement, facilitates discussions of anti-status quo thoughts while simultaneously building a new economy where women purchase directly from one another to propel a more conscious way of sharing resources, all within the LBI digital ecosystem.

From the desk of our Founder, Rose Kaz

When I set out to lead a team to build the LBI Backstage Pass last May of 2021, I wasn’t exactly sure how we were going to create a social media platform built by women in business for women in business but I was clear on why this type of social experience needed to be created. 

I’ve worked in leadership roles of production for most of my professional career and whilst the great covid pivot has shed light on doing more business online, it has also exposed even brighter sore spots in our structures of power, the ways we organize ourselves, money and ultimately, who holds the keys to the purse.

 In preparing to take our in person conversations series with women in business that we launched in 2017,  Ladyboss International, to an online forum, I pulled inspiration from these raw moments of 2020: the killing of George Floyd and many, many other unarmed people of color, the situation at our borders, and of course, the pandemic itself. 

I became more aware of the glaring need to share wealth in more inclusive and generous ways than the patriarchy has historically done. I set out to do that through building a new, woman lead brand that is based fully on this concept of leveling the playing field. Because if the powers that be won’t do it for us, well then, I’ll lead the way my own damn self. 

I have been a student of political science for many years. I hold a degree with a Bachelor of Arts in the subject with a focus on global politics. And whilst I don’t ‘technically’ work in politics at the moment, I believe wholeheartedly that all of our work is political. That is to say, I see how we structure our businesses, our access to resources and how we spend our time to be very political. Even a choice to be a- political is a choice. 

In writing this article about diversity, I don’t want to simply drop some #BLM insights from my seat of white privilege. I do, however, want to dig into how and why we can all do at least 5% more to actually lean into diversity. After all, we all have accents, we all have been born from a mother and we all have the same color blood. These are a few of the long list of things that make being a human both the same AND diverse. We can be many things at once. And that’s ok. 

In drafting the business plan for the launch of the LBI Backstage Pass platform, I remembered a dream I’d had about 5 years ago where I was walking down a busy city street, somewhere like NYC, Chicago or LA. As I was attempting to cross the street, a woman of color in her mid to late 40’s told me in no uncertain terms: ‘STOP WALKING!!!’ And she said it again 2-3 times at even louder decibels to be sure that me and all people attempting to cross the street were acutely aware that we better stop or be met with extreme harm from passing cars. And then moments later, that same crossing guard was assisted by another guardian of the street, also a woman of color, similarly aged and escorting other pedestrians to quickly: “WALK!! GO ON!! HURRY UP AND CROSS THE STREET”; making sure that the safety of all crossing was her chief priority.  And in my dream, I absolutely listened, stopped and then began to walk quickly to obey the boss of the cross walk. 

When I woke up, I began to think about this notion: What if  women of color hold the power innately to move us forward into a better and safer world?? This is likely why these women have been historically marginalized in ways far deeper than other groups because that power is a direct threat to the status quo of the white, patriarchally order.

And if women of color were more embraced for their innate power and for that matter the buzz word of diversity actually became an action item and not a forced inclusion theory to ‘get numbers up’ or make the optics of a business appear to support  black, brown and indigenous women, then we would absolutely see a new world that is, in fact, both a better place FOR ALL and with opportunities for each and every human being to live to their fullest potential.

My point in sharing this dream here in a blog entry written by a woman in business about diversity is not just to have a paragraph to drop into my (sub)conscious thoughts about women of color or to show how I dream my life and the world around me to be. Sure, yea, a peek into my bizarro brain may provide a good laugh or two but my point in sharing this vision is to direct our attention to the bigger picture that when more women are at the helm of business, leadership and ultimately where our money goes, more people will have a better quality of life.

And if the majority of those women in business are darker skinned than I am, even better. I am not advocating for men to have less power. I am calling for women, specifically women of color to have the same amount of power in business, in roles of leadership as men do. Period.
